Satellite Primos 2018-19; Fall 2018 RecruitingSatellite

Los Primos Satellite program provides an enhanced learning experience for developing musicians in a small jazz ensemble setting. Improvisation and learning to play different styles of music is the focus of our instruction. From straight ahead jazz and blues to more sophisticated funk, R&B and Latin grooves, students learn how to play, from professional musicians young and old. The have the opportunity to be in a band where everyone is “into it”.

We are looking for talented students who have been playing for one or two years and are looking to get serious about their learning. You can see the suggested grade levels for each group but if a student is a little older but would enjoy working with younger students, or if they are younger but have unusual talent; if they are keen, and the time works, we are open and flexible.

Over the past 15 years, the Los Primos Project has gained a reputation for producing exceptional young musicians. Los Primos student groups have played to standing ovations at the Halifax Jazz Festival 6 times and are well known throughout Nova Scotia and Cuba. Weekly rehearsals in small groups, with exposure to cultural exchange and inter-generational learning, have been the foundation of the Satellite Primos groups.

Each band is designed around the following instrumentation…

1 piano, 2 bass, 2 drums, 1 guitar - 6 melody instruments – (sax, trumpet, trombone, flute, clarinet, violin) - (vocalists are often included especially if they also play an instrument) - (other instruments may be considered on a case by case basis)
