Satellite Primos 2016-17Satellite

Fall 2016 Recruiting

2015-16 was a great year for the Los Primos Satellite Program. We had groups in Tantallon, Rockingham, Dartmouth and Preston as well as a “Los Primos Mayores” (seniors group) in Dartmouth. They were all performing at a high level, which was very apparent to the crowd at the Stayners Wharf Sunday Jazz 13 year anniversary celebration. All of the groups played a set and sounded totally professional.

Los Primos Satellite program provides an enhanced learning experience for developing musicians in a small jazz ensemble setting. Improvisation and learning to play different styles of music is the focus. From straight ahead jazz and blues to more sophisticated funk, R&B and Latin grooves, students learn how to play from professional musicians young and old. The have the opportunity to be in a band where everyone is “into it”.

Los Primos project is a not for profit organization that been organizing cultural exchanges with music students and profession musicians form Cuba since 1998. Two of our satellite groups went to Cuba in 2015 and we are offering a similar trip to Holguin Cuba in May of 2017.

Our Rockingham Primos under the direction of legendary drummer David Burton, had a couple of key players graduate to university, so we are looking for experienced high school level players on bass, guitar, trumpet and tenor sax.

Two New Groups

We have had such success with the Rockingham group that we want to start a new band called the Bayview Primos which will rehearse from 4:00 to 6:00 on Tuesdays at Townie’s Music (246 Bedford Highway). We are looking for talented students who have been playing for one or two years and are looking to get serious about their learning. We are also looking to start a new group in Dartmouth, which would rehearse on Mondays from 7:00 to 9:00 at 45 White St.

If you are interested in trying out one of these groups please send us an email with the information requested at the end of this letter.

Over the past 15 years, the Los Primos Project has gained a reputation for producing exceptional young musicians. Canadian Primos groups have played to standing ovations at the Halifax Jazz Festival 6 times and are well known throughout Nova Scotia and Cuba. Weekly rehearsals in small groups, with exposure to cultural exchange and inter-generational learning, have been the foundation of the Canadian Primos groups.

Try-outs are very informal where we invite music students to come to a rehearsal, play a few tunes and see how it feels. If it feels like a good fit, then we will welcome the new member to join. Students can get some music in advance of the rehearsal so they can feel more comfortable going in.

Our curriculum is designed around instruction in small ensembles (10 to 12 piece), allowing students to experiment as soloists, learning to improvise and play in different musical styles. Opportunities for live performance and recording, complete their experience and give them the confidence to perform in any situation. Each satellite group in our program is designed to work with a user fee of $20 per student/per 2-hour weekly rehearsal. This fee covers the cost of the principal instructor, guest clinicians, student clinicians, venue rental and administration as well as occasional visits from Cuban musicians.

Each band is designed around the following instrumentation…

1 piano, 2 bass, 2 drums, 1 guitar - 6 melody instruments – (sax, trumpet, trombone, flute, clarinet, violin) - (vocalists are often included especially if they also play an instrument) - (other instruments may be considered on a case by case basis)

Note to Teachers:

If you have several students who would be interested in trying out for one of the bands, we can arrange for a band director to come out to assess the students at your school. Please “Reply All” to this email to request a visit to your school. We can come on any Friday.
