Honour Jazz imageThis month Los Primos has partnered with Honour Jazz for our Rafflebox recipient. The Nova Scotia Honour Jazz program was started in the fall of 1995 by Dave Staples, Jeff Goodspeed, and Paul Barrett. The philosophy behind the program is to provide the opportunity for Nova Scotian junior and senior high school students to participate in jazz ensembles that are not necessarily available to them in their school‐based programs. At three levels – Junior, Intermediate, and Senior ‐ participants were originally chosen through live auditions which were adjudicated by the Honour Jazz staff who traveled to different locations throughout the province to listen to prospective players. In later years technology provided the opportunity for recorded auditions to be submitted for evaluation. School music teacher recommendations are the newest membership criteria. There have been several styles of groups in this program over the years: big band jazz ensembles, funk bands, Latin Bands, improvisation groups, and vocal jazz ensembles. Ken MacKay, Robyn Alcorn‐Martin, David Burton, and Nick Fisher are the current key staff members keeping the music happening as this great program goes into its 26th year this coming September.

Help Honour Jazz to continue its longstanding role in Nova Scotia Music. Returns from this raffle will contribute to costs and lost revenue as they navigate the challenges of Covid‐19.

Los Primos is a not‐for‐profit organization. Our mission... to inspire, support, and promote live music, music education, and social awareness, in Nova Scotia and in Cuba, through cultural exchange and intergenerational learning. Music and music education in Nova Scotia have benefited greatly from our work. During these two decades, we have helped music programs to raise more than $600,000 for their music projects and supplied instruments to many local students in need. Clinics, workshops, and performances with Canadian and Cuban students and professionals, playing together... provide learning experiences that last a lifetime!
